Where is Shell Ridge?
"My dream is that the whole of Mount Diablo,
including its foothills, will remain open space...
that the visual and natural integrity will be sustained."
Dr. Mary Bowerman
Save Mount Diablo Co-Founder
Thanks to Dr. Bowerman and many other community organizers, Shell Ridge Open Space in Walnut Creek was set aside as a park in the 1970’s. It is a spectacular symbol of a lifestyle that leaves the perception of tract-home suburbia in the dust! The open space encompasses over 1400 acres that was once a sea bed, its name taken from the fossilized shells found in the area rocks. The beauty of the rolling hills studded with oak trees and rock outcroppings is a true gem of Walnut Creek, indeed the entire Diablo Valley. It is extraordinary all year long whether you visit in the winter and spring to witness wildflowers among a leafy green carpet or the wheaten gold of summer and fall.
Its sawtooth ridgeline can be easily seen driving east on Highway 24 at the Highway 680 approach. Shell Ridge connects the city’s canal trails to Diablo Foothill Regional Park and Mt. Diablo State Park, and if you so desire, you could hike continuous trails to either Mt. Diablo to the east or Briones Regional Park to the west. Shell Ridge is literally in my backyard and I avail myself of its hiking curatives every chance I get. There is no better name for my brokerage than to honor where I live, work and play.
